What colour is a pearl​?

Pearls can come in a range of colours:

  • Freshwater pearls - These come in pastel colours like apricot and lavender, as well as white and cream.
  • Akoya pearls - These tend to come in white and cream with pink and green overtones. 
  • South sea pearls - These pearls tend to come in yellow, white, silver or golden tones.

Tahitian pearls - These have more darker colours such as aubergine, green, blue, grey, black, purple, pistachio and peacock.

How to see if a pearl is real​?

There are a number of tests you can do to see if a pearl is real. Here are a few examples:

  1. The tooth test - By rubbing the pearl against the biting edge of your teeth it should feel slightly gritty or rough if it’s real, whereas fake ones will feel smooth.
  2. The weight test - You can compare the weight of the pearl with a pearl you know is real that is a similar size. A real pearl will be denser and heavier than a fake one.

Inspecting the surface of your pearl - Natural pearls are naturally formed and will therefore be irregular in some way. You should also look at the lustre of the pearl, as they should have a deep, luminous shine rather than a dull sheen.
